Director's Message

September 11, 2001 was my younger brother, Marshall’s, birthday. Marshall turned 30 while the citizens and visitors of the United States turned scared.

Like so many of you, I have unresolved thoughts and feelings about the terrible events which occurred to us on September 11. As an American, I find myself repeating in my mind, “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.” As a parent, I find myself terrified for my children who will begin their precious lives in a time of fear, turmoil and uncertainty. As an educator, I find myself glued to the news....forever processing and wading through the plethora of information. However, it is when I reflect on the events of September 11 as a person, thinking only in the context of “me,” I find myself holding on to the belief that there is more good than bad; and that I will make a positive impact on someone every day.

So, I challenge you. I challenge you to a “random act of kindness.” Make a positive impact on someone every day. Let us use this time of chaos, anger, frustration, whatever name you want to give it, to improve ourselves and our environment. I am looking forward to hearing about your acts.

Love each other,
Cheryl

Barbara Murray

Barb is currently pursuing a degree in Fine Arts (and a certificate in Welding) with her eventual goal of transfering to WCU for sculpture.

Barb's hobbies and interests include, but are not limited to, reading, cooking, photography, gardening, carpentry, dancing, painting, massage, and crafts. She is the loving mother of four, a nurse, and enjoys movies. Barb's myriad of talents and accomplishments is endless. . . Barb is also the author of a handy cookbook on crockpot cooking, Crock-it; and she is currently in the process of writing a book which will include a compilation of angel stories. Please contact Barb if you have a story to share!

When asked who at SCC has been an inspiration to her, Barb said "Laurie Smith has inspired me. I believe the only disability is a bad attitude and Laurie always presents a positive attitude and inquisitive nature. She gets things done, and when she doesn't know something, she admits it and then finds out!"

Interestingly, this summer Barb was delighted with the playful antics of a frequent visitor. This entertaining visitor, a beautiful hummingbird, enjoyed popping the balloons hung outside Barb's home.

If you have not had the pleasure of meeting this enchanting and vivacious woman, seek her out. Barb's other home is in one of the Advertising & Graphic Design rooms located in Oaks Hall. If you hear some contagious laughter permeating from one of these rooms, it is probably Barb!
