Explanation
MAR
(Minimum Admissions Requirements)
MAR
stands for minimum admissions requirements
for all students beginning their NC University
experience fall semester 1990 and beyond.
The following course work is required for
admissions in addition to an institution's
own specific requirements:
English ~ four course units
Math ~ three course units which include
algebra I, algebra II and geometry
Science ~ three course units which include
life/biological, physical and laboratory
Social Studies ~ two course units which
include U.S. History
FALL 2004 ~ two units of foreign language
FALL 2006 ~ one additional unit of mathematics
beyond algebra II will be required
Special consideration is provided (when
a MAR deficiency occurs) in the following
categories: if you graduated before 1989;
if you are at least 24 years of age; if
you have an excellent academic record through
the 11th grade and have completed all requirements
for high school graduation; if you are a
transfer student who has an AA, AAS, BA,
BS degree; if you are a transfer student
pursuing a degree under an articulation
agreement; or if you are a transfer student
who has completed six semester hours of
transferable course work in the following
areas: English, math, science, social behavioral
sciences and foreign language.
If you have met MAR requirements, have
a decent GPA and SAT score, application
to the university can be made any time during
your SCC tenure.
SCC
Longevity
Knowing how long you want to stay at
SCC will be a factor in deciding your SCC
course work.
If you want to get to the university setting
as soon as possible, you must pay careful
attention to the MAR. If you MET MAR but
were denied acceptance into the university,
you must take 30 transferable hours (6 hrs
each in Eng, math, science, social science
and foreign language), earning a grade of
C or better, before you re-apply. If you
DID NOT MEET MAR, then take ONLY MAR deficient
course work and NOTHING else, then reapply
to the university; however, this will not
assure your acceptance as your high school
GPA and SAT score will still be considered.
If you are still denied acceptance, then
you must take 30 transferable hours earning
a grade of C or better before you can reapply
If you choose NOT to complete a degree before
transferring, credit is awarded on a course
per course basis and you must abide by the
receiving institutions general education
requirements. Your academic history will
be a strong factor in determining how many
courses must be completed before admission
is granted into the senior institution.
If you are in no hurry to get to the university,
discuss with your advisor the degree that
will work best to help you achieve your
future goals.
University
Decisions
Knowing which university
you want to attend will take some of the
guessing out of your SCC course work.
If you know where you want to go and are
choosing not to complete a degree, be sure
you follow the course articulation agreement
between SCC and your chosen institution
and work closely with your advisor to reduce
your lost credit rate.
If you do not know which university you
want to attend, at a minimum, the 44 hour
core is your safest bet as this will allow
you to complete all of the general education
requirements at any public NC university.

AA
Transfer Degree
In 1997, the North Carolina Community College
System and the University of North Carolina
System reached an agreement to help facilitate
the transferring of students from the community
college into the university. This agreement
is known as the "North Carolina Comprehensive
Articulation Agreement." This agreement
identifies community college courses that
are appropriate to satisfy general education
requirements, pre-major requirements and
electives. If you fully meet the 44 credit
hour core at a community
college (not multiple community colleges),
the university will recognize that all of
your general education requirements have
been met. Furthermore, if you choose to
complete the additional 20 credit hours
worth of classes to complete the associate's
degree, you will be treated as a junior
at any UNC institution, providing you are
admitted. All courses
taken must be successfully completed with
a grade of "C" or better.
If you earn a "D" you can still
earn the degree and the MAR will be waived;
however, the general education requirements
may not have been met. Because universities
differ in their admission requirements,
you are encouraged to contact the university
to learn admissions specifics.

** Physical Education
is the only area that the receiving institution
may require which is not part of the 44
core hours. Three (3) credit hours are recommended.
*To complete the AA degree, choose 17 additional
elective hours from the above prefixes.
College transfer general education, elective
and/or pre-major courses are required. Courses
in health, physical education, college orientation
and study skills may be included. Work experience
may be included up to 1 SHC for career exploration.
It is not necessary
to complete the degree or the 44-hour core,
but it is highly advisable! If
you do not complete the degree, or core,
you will have to meet specific general education
requirements at your chosen university.
Also, without the degree or 44 hour core
requirements met, transfer equivalencies
are provided on a course-to-course basis.
This process does not always work to benefit
you. If you decide not to do the core or
the degree, be sure to work VERY closely
with your advisor who will assist you with
the most up-to-date course transfer agreements.

About
Pre-Major Associate in Arts
Southwestern Community College has 10 pre-major
Associate in Arts Degrees. The following
Pre-Major Associate in Arts Programs at
SCC are co-operatively designed with four-year
state institutions to achieve a seamless
junior-level transfer. If you complete one
of these pre-major packages at SCC (consisting
of 64-66 semester hours) you will be guaranteed
transfer with full junior status into a
baccalaureate major; assuming you are admitted.
These programs
of study are strongly recommended for SCC
transfer students who feel sure of their
eventual major.
- Business Administration
- Business Education
and Marketing Education
- Criminal Justice
- History
- Nursing
- Physical Education
- Political Science
- Psychology
- Social Science
Secondary Education
- Sociology
Refer to SCC's catalog
to check out specific course requirements
for the pre-major you intend to study. (see
programs on-line)
Admission application deadlines vary; you
must meet the deadline for the university
to which you plan to transfer. Also, you
must meet the receiving university's foreign
language and/or health and physical education
requirements, if applicable, prior to or
after transfer to the senior institution.
3 SHC in speech/communication may be substituted
for 3 SHC in humanities/fine arts. Speech/communication
may not substitute for the literature requirement.
Lastly, grade point average requirements
vary, and admission is competitive in some
of the pre-majors.
SCC~WCU
Connection
M.A.T.E.
M.A.T.E. stands for Mountain Alliance for
Transfer Education (MATE). MATE is a unique
consortium agreement with Western Carolina
University which allows Southwestern Community
College Students to dual enroll at both
colleges. To take advantage of courses offered
through the alliance, you must be enrolled
full-time, must have completed 12 SCC semester
hours at the 100 level or above with at
least a 2.0 and must be enrolled in a SCC
college transfer degree program. You may
take only one alliance course per semester
and the course taken at WCU must be one
that will count towards your degree requirements
and must not usually be offered at SCC.
The
"HOOPS" to know
What gets your best friend into the university
may not necessarily get you there! Your
academic background will be a strong factor
in determining your transfer choices at
SCC. If you are not a first time transfer
student (you have taken classes at ANY other
institution,) be sure to communicate this
with your advisor. Consult with your transfer
advisor, as she will know "back door"
policy regarding age, non-traditional student
status, transient student status and non-degree
status.
Articulated
Courses
In addition to articulated general education
courses, SCC has articulation agreements
with several WCU colleges honoring the transferring
in of technical course work. However, it
is very important for you to remember that
SCC is a two-year institution and the universities
RARELY accept coursework for their classes
numbered at the 300 or above level. Check
in regularly with your transfer advisor
as she will have the latest transferability
of courses or can easily call to confirm
transferability between SCC and other four-year
institutions. If you have access to a computer,
you have the ability to check-in with WCU's
on-line course transferability by logging
into the following site: http://www.wcu.edu/registar/Transfer/NCCC.
WCU
Computing Standards
You may find that your intended university
will require you to own a computer. WCU
has a computer admissions requirement. Beginning
fall semester, 1998, all freshman attending
WCU were required to own a computer and
that requirement was extended to the transfer
student beginning fall semester 2000. Most
universities are adding the computer admissions
requirement because they want their graduates
to have access to the highest quality of
education, which now includes maximum use
of technology.
Please note that the computer is added
into the financial aid package and WCU has
estimated that a full, Pell Grant student
will receive 60% of the computer cost. The
Chancellor at WCU has said that
you will not be denied acceptance because
you can not afford a computer!
WCU has defined their computer requirements
by connectivity to the Internet and 24
hour access to WCU's network. If you
live at home you will need an Internet provider.
WCU's computer store offers for sale competitively
priced computer packages and accessories.
You may purchase your computer through any
vendor; however, computers purchased from
the WCU Computer store will be pre-configured
for easy connection to the university's
network and will include all required software.
Required Hardware
If you need to purchase
a computer: Either a Pentium
or a PowerMac computer can meet the university's
computer admissions requirement. The minimum
configurations for a newly purchased computer
are as follows:
| Windows System
- 1.8 GHz processor
- 512 MB RAM, expandable
- 40 GB hard drive
- Color monitor, .28mm or lower

Transition
Seminar
The Student Support Services
Transfer Initiative offers a Transition
Seminar which is designed to
assist the SSS transfer student in all aspects
of the transition process from the two-year
college to the four-year university. The
seminar will address academic, personal
and career development as well as internal
and external resource availability at the
intended university. Demographic make-up
of the four-year university is covered in
addition to college visitation decisions.
College visitations are viewed as an integral
part of the transfer decision making process.
Each College visitation will include the
following components: admissions meeting,
financial aid meeting, campus tour, SSS
visitation (when appropriate) and visits
with appropriate faculty within schools
of interest. Transfer students are STRONGLY
encouraged to take part in these regularly
scheduled college trips.
The transition seminar is scheduled twice
each semester.

Transfer
Checklist
Now that you have all of the specifics,
your final question may be "How
do I get from here to there?" The
most important thing you can do is to stay
in regular contact with your advisor! Beyond
your advisor contacts, use the following
sequential checklist to keep you on course:
Pre-university application
- Seek out an advisor to assist you in
identifying and exploring your course
of study.
- Take a career test to confirm your intended
major.
- Research potential universities on the
Internet. Begin with the web site http://www.collegeboard.org
- Choose a university that is right for
you - one that will help you meet your
goals. Get a catalog from your intended
university and note transfer requirements
important deadlines. (Not all universities
have "rolling" admissions).
- Establish a transfer plan that will
meet the academic requirements of your
intended major.
- Maintain a SCC checklist of classes
you need to fulfill your academic requirements.
- Use your intended universities "financial
aid" code on your yearly financial
aid application.
- Take a college trip to confirm your
university choice.
Application process:
- Complete an application for admissions
and pay the $$$ application fee.
Complete appropriate essays and/or interviews.
Check for required advance partial payments.
- Submit official transcripts from all
colleges and universities attended.
- Submit a high school transcript unless
an AA or AS degree has been completed
OR graduation from high school prior to
1988.
- Submit SAT or ACT scores, unless 30
hours of college level work has been completed.
- Submit a financial aid transcript.
- Participate in a SCC "loan"
exit interview (if you received loans).
- Explore housing possibilities.
- Research scholarship availability.
Upon acceptance:
- Submit health documents (this will be
provided to you by the university)
- Submit a final SCC transcript.
- Sign-up for transfer orientation (the
earlier the better)! Take necessary placements
exams and register for classes. Pay for
tuition and fees.
- Attend classes!
