Using skills he learned
in class, former Southwestern
Community College computer
engineering and electronic
engineering technology student
Rocky Frizzell designed
emergency call boxes and
a public address system
for the Jackson Campus’
critical incident response.
Being familiar with campus,
he understood that college
officials didn’t want
just a siren but a public
address system that announces
what the situation is. He
incorporated the PA system
into the two-way radios
carried by campus resource
officers and key campus
personnel. He also designed
the campus call box system
where the signal goes directly
to the hand-held radios.
“At Southwestern,
90 percent of the electronics
classes I took actually
related to the security
system I designed. This
system works off wireless
connectivity so I had to
have a good knowledge of
wireless applications,”
said Rocky, who was recently
hired by the N.C. Highway
Patrol to handle communications
and data for Troop G, encompassing
the 17 westernmost counties.
Ironically, he said, two
of the other radio engineers
in the communications department
are Southwestern graduates.
“I think that attests
to the caliber of training
we received at SCC,”
he said.
