Greg
Heim decided to go out and
see what kind of jobs he
could work with only a high
school education. He went
from food service jobs,
to gas station clerk jobs
and eventually ended up
paving roads 15-18 hours
a day.
“On what seemed like
the hottest day of that
summer I decided I would
take another look at college
and find something that
peaked my interest because
I would not be satisfied
working with my back instead
of my brain,” said
Greg, who wanted a hands-on
technical field of study.
He chose Southwestern Community
College’s Electronic
and Computer Engineering
Technologies, graduating
with a degree in electronics.
Now he works with General
Dynamics Information Technology
in a career traveling the
world installing, maintaining
and upgrading military training
equipment that saves the
lives of the men and women
of the United States military.
“What is there not
to like about a career like
that?” he says.
“Uniquely, Greg’s
father was one of my students
about the time Greg was
born,” said EET program
coordinator Ron Poor. “I’m
always flattered when a
parent whom I taught supports
sending a child to me for
instruction. It makes me
believe that we must be
getting it right.”
