Southwestern Community College's Success Stories

Matt Lemmens

Matt Lemmens, former cloth lifter at Rabun Apparel, took pride in his job and the security it provided his family. When the plant closed, Matt suddenly lost that sense of security and felt “like I was cut off at the knees.” He always knew he was capable of more than lifting heavy objects, but “when you build your life on the ability to provide a secure environment for your family, pursuing personal higher education goals seem like unrealistic indulgences.” Matt was nervous about going back to school but he decided to fulfill his aspiration of becoming a middle school teacher and enrolled in Southwestern Community College’s early childhood education program. “From my very first experiences to the very last semester I was supported, encouraged and challenged by instructors whose passion and dedication went beyond the grade. They showed me that when education is the rising tide that carries all who participate to a level beyond their assumed potential, a community is created that is wiser and stronger as a result. I am proud to be a part of that process.” A May 2008 graduate, Matt currently substitute teaches and in January will attend Western Carolina University to complete his teacher training.
