You are provided with
an email address as soon as you begin taking
classes at SCC. This account is yours until
you stop attending classes. All students
at SCC are provided an e-mail account. This
e-mail account will be an important and
official channel of communication between
you, your instructor, and your academic
advisors and the college.
Reminders for using
email, both professionally and personally
- Include a clear and
specific subject line.
- Read your own message
a few times before sending it to prevent
inaccuracies
- Check your spelling and
grammar use.
- Do not curse, flame,
spam or USE ALL CAPS in your message.
All are considered bad e-mail etiquette.
- Do not forward any chain
letters
- Do not use e-mail for
any illegal or unethical purpose.
- Realize that e-mail
is a public, not a private medium.
I already have an
existing email account; do I have to use
the school’s email account?
You do not have to use
this account for all of your email, but
realize that is the best form of communication
for the Network Services Specialist and
your instructors to contact you. Also, these
addresses are available for your advisors
and instructors at any time. If they email
you, they will send the message to that
address. It is important to check your email
at least once a week or so. This will help
keep you updated on school activities.
Is there a limit
as to how many email accounts I can have?
No, you can have as many
email accounts, as you desire. You can organize
yourself and use a different email account
for a different purpose; one could be personal,
one academic, and one for mailing lists
and newsgroups and so on.
How
do I check my student email provided through
SCC?
Once you are on-line and
the browser has loaded, enter http://webmail.southwesterncc.edu
in the address location of the browser (where
you type in the URL’s). Remember,
there is NO www before this address. Once
the address is keyed in, press the enter
key. This will take you to a screen that
says "Welcome." You will need
to click on the "LOG IN" button
in the upper left corner. After clicking
on Log In, you will see a gray screen pop
up asking for a username and password.
You will need to use your
USERNAME and PASSWORD to access your E-MAIL
account and read your messages. Your USERNAME
is the first letter of your first name,
followed by the first four (4) letters of
your last name, followed by the last four
(4) digits of your Colleague ID. Your PASSWORD
is your birth date (mmddyy).
FOR
EXAMPLE: If your name is Sam Masters
and your student ID is 3456789
Example USERNAME : smast6789
Your PASSWORD is your birth
date (mmddyy)
Example PASSWORD : 010190
Where is the student
e-mail server located?
The e-mail server is physically
located on the main SCC campus on the 3rd
floor of the Balsam Center. The server and
user-database is maintained by a dedicated
staff of friendly computer support professionals.
What is my e-mail
address?
Share your e-mail
address (not your password) with classmates,
faculty, advisors, and friends so they can
send e-mail to your account.
Your E-MAIL address is:
username@webmail.southwesterncc.edu
Example E-MAIL
address :
smast6789@webmail.southwesterncc.edu
Can
I use my SCC provided e-mail service to
send e-mail to people off-campus?
Yes, your e-mail
account is a fully featured, Internet based
e-mail service. In addition to your username/password,
which you need so you can access your mailbox
and read your mail, you will also have an
e-mail address. Share your e-mail address
(not your username or password) with your
friends and they can send e-mail messages
to you that you can retrieve when you login.
When should I login and
check my e-mail?
It is important that you
access your e-mail account immediately because
you will be receiving official communications
from the college about your application,
admission status and enrollment. Moreover,
your instructor will be using your e-mail
address to send you information about your
class(s).
Do I have to use
a computer on-campus to send and receive
e-mail from my SCC e-mail account?
No, you do not need
to be on-campus to access your e-mail account.
You can access your e-mail account from
any PC that has an Internet connection.
I
have an e-mail account with (Dnet, Yahoo,
Hotmail, MSN, etc.). Can I use it instead
of my SCC provided e-mail service?
Yahoo, MSN, Hotmail are
all fine services. However, SCC staff, administrators,
and faculty will be using your SCC e-mail
box to conduct all official college and
class related business. You do not have
to "give-up" your Hotmail or Yahoo
accounts, however, you will not find SCC
related information in any of your e-mail
accounts except the one provided by SCC.
Why can't I use my (Dnet,
Yahoo, Hotmail, MSN, etc.) instead of the
SCC provided e-mail?
SCC will provide a level
of service that your other e-mail service
cannot match. All your instructors will
know what your e-mail address is (without
you having to tell them), so you don't miss
any important information regarding your
classes, schedules or upcoming activities.
Also, unwanted and unnecessary e-mail will
be kept to a minimum because SCC will not
share your e-mail address with 3rd parties.
Additionally, our help-desk can locate and
retrieve any important e-mail that you suspect
may have been misdirected, not sent, or
not received.
What happens if I don't use my SCC e-mail
account?
If you don't access your
SCC provided e-mail account, you will miss
important information from your instructors,
advisors, and college staff.
If I am having a
problem with my account, whom should I contact
at SCC who can help me? If
you are on-campus, you may visit the Computer
Operations Center located on the 3rd floor
of the Balsam Center at SCC's main campus
in Sylva. The hours of operation are: 8-5
Mondays thru Fridays. If you are unable
to visit the Computer Operation Center,
you may call (828) 586-4091 ext. 424 or
e-mail support@southwesterncc.edu.
