Dial-up Instructions for XP

Section 1: Configuring a Dial Up Connection to SCC

1.       Click on the Start button  

2.       Click on the Control Panel icon.

3.       Click on Network and Internet Connections.

4.       Under Pick A Task, click on Setup or Change Your Internet Connection. A new window called Internet Properties will pop up as shown below. Click on the Setup button at the top right.

 5. You will see a new window titled the Welcome to the New Connection Wizard as shown below. Click on the Next button

6. On the screen titled Network Connection Type, as shown below, select Connect to the Internet then click on the Next button.

7. On the screen titled Getting Ready, as shown below, select the option Setup my connection manually then click on the Next button.

8. On the screen titled Internet Connection, as shown below, select the option Connect Using a Dial up Modem then click on the Next button.

9. On the screen titled Connection Name, as shown below, type in: SCC Dialup in the box under ISP Name then click on the Next button.

10. On the screen titled Phone Number to Dial, as shown below, enter the connection number which applies to your county (see note below) then click on the Next button.  

·         Jackson County users enter 631-0500

·         Macon County users enter 349-0500

·         Swain County users enter 488-0500

11. On the screen titled Internet Account Information, as shown below, you will enter the username assigned to you along with the proper context.

User name:  In the user name field enter .username.student.scc (make sure you start with the period).  Your username will consist of the first letter of your first name, the first four letters of your last name, and the last four digits of your Colleague ID number.

Example:  You are a student named Sam Masters and your Colleague ID number 0456789.  Your user name would be smast6789, so in the username box above you would enter .smast6789.student.scc.

Password:  Your Password is your birth date in this format mmddyy.

Example:  Your birth date is Jan 1, 1990 and your password would be 010190

12. On the screen titled Completing the New Connection Wizard, as shown below, you may optionally click on the box next to Add a shortcut to my connection to my desktop in order to make the connection more convenient. Click on the Finish button.

Section 2: Configuring Internet Explorer 

1. Click on the Start button.

2. Click on the Control Panel icon.

3. Click on Network and Internet Connections.

4. Under Pick a Task, click on Setup or Change your Internet Connection. A new window called Internet Properties will pop up as shown below.

 

Optionally, you may wish to have your computer connect to the Internet whenever you open your Internet Browser. If so, click on the little button next to Always Dial my Default Connection unless you have a local network, then you should click on Dial Whenever a Network Connection is not present.

 

5. Click on SCC Dialup to highlight it and click on the Settings button (to the right of the SCC Dial Up connection) A new window called SCC Dialup Settings will pop up as shown below. Verify that your dialup username and password are entered in the fields labeled, Username: and Password: If they are not, enter them now.

 

6. Click in the box next to Use a Proxy Server for this Connection (to place a check mark there), then click on the Advanced button.

7. A new window called Proxy Settings will pop up as shown below. In the HTTP box type in the following numbers as shown: 10.211.30.13 and the port number is: 80. In the Socks box type in the following numbers as shown: 10.211.30.13 and the port number is: 1080. Optionally, you may enter *.southwesterncc.edu (no spaces) in the box labeled Exceptions. Click OK to close the Proxy Settings window.

8. Click OK to close the SCC Dialup Settings window and you will be returned to the Internet Properties window. Click on the General tab at the top left of the window and you will see a window like the one shown below. Enter the page you wish to use as your start up home page. For example, you may wish to use http://www.yahoo.com or http://www.southwesterncc.edu but you may choose to use whatever web page you prefer. Click OK to close the Internet Properties window.

Section 3: Getting Connected

 1. If you chose to add the SCC Dial Up icon to your desktop, at the end of Section 1, you can double click on that. Alternatively, if you did not put an icon on your desktop, you can connect by clicking on the Start button, clicking on Connect To then clicking on SCC Dialup. You should see a window labeled Connect SCC Dialup like the one shown below.

2. Verify that your dialup username and password are entered in the fields labeled, Username: and Password: If they are not, enter them now. If you see [To Change the Saved Password, Click Here] in the password field as shown above, leave it alone.

 3. You may choose to save your password so that you don't have to re-type it at each connection. If you wish to enter your password each time you connect, click on the box labeled Save this Username and Password for the Following Users to remove the check from it. 

4. Click on the Dial button and you will see a status box on your screen and may hear the modem begin to dial. The status box will go through a few processes: Dialing, Verifying Username and Password, and finally Logging onto the Network 

5. Once your computer is logged onto the network, you will see two small computers in the lower right hand corner of your screen-beside the clock. Your computer is communicating with the modems and your phone line is now tied up.  

If you launch your browser by double clicking on the Internet Explorer icon, from the desktop or start menu, you should see your start home page appear.

 

Section 4: Disconnecting

 1. When you are finished with your session, double click on the two computers beside your clock and click on Disconnect (button). This will also allow you to see your connection speed and the duration of your session via your status window.
