Step 1: Use Your Future Major and School as a Guide

The following is a list of “Pathways to Majors” websites for some North Carolina colleges/universities. If you cannot find the school you are looking for, find and browse that school’s website or contact the school’s transfer advising department (or the department that directs your major). Colleges/universities call these plans by a variety of names, so you may need to search for: Major Pathways, Pathways to Degrees, Curriculum Plans, and Four Year Guides/Plans. As always, feel free to ask one of our advisors if you need help!

For Students Transferring to Western Carolina University (WCU):
If you will be transferring to WCU, visit WCU’s “CAA Major Pathway Four Year Plans” website before you visit, and before you register for SCC classes. It contains an alphabetized list of WCU majors: find your major, open it, and save it and/or print it. The shaded areas denote classes that you might be able to take here at Southwestern Community College: use these shaded areas to carefully guide your planning and SCC course selection. The unshaded areas denote classes that you will need to take at WCU. Typically, these are upper-level courses, specific to that major, which we do not offer at SCC.

UNC-Charlotte’s Major Pathways (Pathways to Degrees)

UNC-Greensboro’s Major Pathways (Curriculum Plans)

Other Public Colleges/Universities in the University of North Carolina System:
The University of North Carolina system includes public, non-profit colleges and universities (sometimes called state schools). Examples include Appalachian State and UNC-Wilmington. If you did not find your college/university on our list, or if you are not sure if your future college/university is a state school, click here for a more extensive list – then consult with that school’s website or admissions department. Colleges/universities call these Major Pathways plans by a variety of names, so you may need to search for Pathways to Degrees, Curriculum Plans, or Four Year Guides/Plans.

For Students Transferring to a private North Carolina school, or to an out-of-state school:
North Carolina private schools include Warren Wilson and Wake Forest University. Out of state schools include Clemson University and Georgia Tech. If you will be transferring to either a private North Carolina college/university, or to a non-North Carolina (out of state) school, you need to consult carefully with SCC’s University Transfer Advising Center and with that college or university transfer admissions department before you register for classes. Be sure to alert your transfer advisor about your plans, and your major – and choose your community college courses very carefully, as private and out of state schools often have different transfer criteria than North Carolina public colleges/universities.
