Career Counseling and Assessment

You can make an appointment with a Career Counselor to discuss your major and career options. We can help you understand your interests, abilities, and values that may lead to an informed choice of major and an ideal career.  A Career Counselor can help you can determine the next steps that are best for you.  Call 828.339.4352 and ask to schedule an appointment with Michael Despeaux or Jodie Waldroup.
Career Assessment
The process of choosing a major or career often begins with assessment. Consider taking one of the assessments we offer to learn more about your interests, personality, skills/abilities, and values. Then, meet with a career counselor to discuss your results and the majors and careers you may want to research.
Self-assessment tests may be used during counseling.  Tests offer an opportunity to identify possible strong career options, but they cannot make better decisions for you than you can through counseling and research.
Keep in mind that no single test can tell you "what you should be" and that successful career planning may require more than one appointment.
Assessment Instruments
Career Coach – Take the longer (it is still very short) version assessment in our Career Coach program to gain knowledge of your interests that aligns with many of the most reputable instruments.  Also, your Career Coach results will link to majors at SCC and related careers and jobs that are similar to your interests, complete with salary information, outlook, and descriptions.  You can even search and apply for real jobs in this area and beyond!
Personality Mosaic – This paper-and-pencil assessment will yield accurate interest results that are based on the same theory as the Career Coach and the Strong Interest Inventory.  If you cannot take the Career Coach assessment online, then print and complete the Personality Mosaic or pick one up at the Career Center, and take your results to the Career Counselor for discussion.
Strong Interest Inventory – This assessment matches your interests with the interests of people who have been in career fields at least three years and are at least satisfied with their work.  To take the SII and make an appointment for the interpretation of your results, call 828.339.4352 to schedule an appointment with a Career Counselor.

  • Myers-Briggs Personality Inventory - The MBTI is the most widely used personality inventory in the world. This personality instrument is based on psychological type preferences. It provides information about your personality style and the way that you interact with the world. It is used to help you understand the relationship between personality, communication, and careers.  Contact the SCC Career Center to take the MBTI, or take a similar inventory called the Jung Typology Test which yields instant, free results, and make an appointment with a Career Counselor to discuss them.
Other Self-Assessment Options
If you prefer to complete other self-assessments on your own, the options below are reputable and reliable assessments.  Before completing any of the self-assessment inventories, please be aware that there is a cost associated with some of the instruments. Please check before beginning an assessment, and you can still bring your results to the Career Center for interpretation and career counseling.
