Rowan Stuart’s favorite kayak maneuver is called the “Phonix Monkey” and involves spinning the vessel on its bow like a pirouette for a full 360 degrees then flipping the boat end over end. There’s nothing easy about the trick, but Stuart’s ability to cleanly achieve it at high-level competitions is a big reason she’ll be competing in the Nantahala Freestyle World Championships that start Sept. 2 at the Nantahala Outdoor Center.

Two outstanding Southwestern Community College students, Melody MacDonald and Andrew Timan, have received fall 2013 Western Carolina University Chancellor’s Achievement Awards.  Each award is a full scholarship that covers tuition and fees for two years.  It is presented to one or two transferring students each year, chosen by an SCC selection committee, from a very select pool of applicants with grade point averages of 3.75 or higher and successful completion of approximately 60 hours of transfer credit.

For students in the summer quilting class at Southwestern Community College, it’s not just about what they can get out of the course, it’s what they can do to give in the process.  Instead of getting started on their own projects, the students chose to dedicate a full session to creating squares for the Quilts of Valor Project.

Southwestern Community College announced the President’s and Dean's lists for Spring 2013. To earn the honor of President’s List students must achieve and maintain a 3.85 Grade Point Average. Students with a GPA between 3.50 and 3.84 earn the honor of the Dean's List. Diania McRae, Accounting Program Coordinator at SCC, has been appointed to the advisory board of the Southeastern Region of the American Accounting Association (SEAAA). The members of the advisory board were chosen by the president of the SEAAA, Dr. Lynn H. Clements, at the 2013 Annual SEAAA conference.  Dr. Clements stated that, “It is a well-rounded group that I believe represents us well.”

SCC's New Century Scholars (NCS) program recently received a check for $1500 from the Duke Energy Foundation.  The check will support the NCS programs in Jackson, Macon and Swain counties.  The NCS program, which began in 1995, is a collaborative educational effort among public schools in the three counties and SCC.  The NCS program targets high potential students at the end of the 6th grade and provides extra support to those students through their middle and high school years and while enr

Southwestern Community College recently hosted the N.C. Auto Diesel Instructors’ Association (NCADIA) Spring meeting on the SCC Jackson Campus, which is the first time this event has been held in western North Carolina. Trainers from CDX Books Company and Snap-On Tools addressed current NCADIA issues and National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) updates, as well as new diagnostics tools available this year. Advance Auto Parts also sponsored a Delphi Automotive Training session. More than 20 N.C.

Students of the SCC Advertising & Graphic Design (ADG) program recently presented their work at the annual ADG Portfolio Show.  Many of these students graduated this spring and will use these portfolios in their job searches. In attendance were SCC faculty and staff, parents, and potential employers.

SCC held its spring commencement ceremony on Tuesday, May 7 in the Balsam Center Auditorium on the Jackson Campus. The largest graduating class to date—the 349 graduate candidates included 95 from Career Technologies, 110 from Arts and Sciences and 144 from Health Sciences (23 have double majors including one graduate with a quadruple major). Faculty speaker, Deanne Oppermann, chemistry instructor and the NCCCS Excellence in Teaching Award Recipient, gave an inspiring charge to the graduating students.
