Sensory Room: this room is designed to provide a soothing escape from overstimulating public places

Do you need a place to go when you’re feeling overwhelmed?

You can find our SCC Sensory Room in Room 231 on the second floor of the Balsam Center on the Jackson Campus.

The Sensory Room has been made possible by a grant from the SCC Foundation and with the support of the Smoky Mountain STEM Collaborative, and it is managed by Student Accessibility.

What is a sensory room?

A sensory room is designed to provide a soothing escape from overstimulating public spaces. It contains warm white and colored LED lights that can be adjusted via remote control, coloring sheets and colored pencils, seating, a lava lamp, a bubble tube, a soothing imagery projector, a sound machine, a small fan, and fidget items.

When can I use the SCC Sensory Room?

The room is available 8:00 am through 5:00 pm, Monday through Thursday and 8:00 am through 12:00 pm on Fridays.

How can I use the SCC Sensory Room?

Visit the SCC Sensory Room by going to the second floor of the Balsam Center on SCC’s Jackson Campus. Go left after exiting the elevator or taking the stairs and follow the signs to Room 231.

We are happy to make this space available to you, but please be mindful of others:

  • Knock on the door before entering
  • Please be quiet
  • Limit 1 person at a time
  • Be mindful of others who may be waiting to use the space
  • Please do not remove items from the room
  • Please leave the space the way you found it
