18 students receive Golden LEAF scholarships

Over this past fall semester, 18 Southwestern Community College students received scholarships through the Golden LEAF Scholarship program for the N.C. Community College System.

The program is designed to help North Carolinians attend the state’s community colleges.

Each scholarship can be used for tuition, books, fees, supplies, transportation, childcare and mid-skills credential testing expenses related to attending classes during the 2018-19 academic year.

Curriculum and continuing education students are eligible for scholarships during the spring, summer and fall semesters.

Curriculum students who received scholarships for the fall semester were:

CHEROKEE COUNTY: Megan Golden of Murphy.

GRAHAM COUNTY: Terran Jordan of Robbinsville.

JACKSON COUNTY: Lee Culler of Cherokee, Kristina Frady of Sylva, Leigh Gaddis of Cullowhee, Trevor Gates of Webster, Tracie Hall of Sylva, Shaina Prewitt of Webster and Jessica Watkins of Whittier.

MACON COUNTY: Jennifer Hernandez of Otto.

SWAIN COUNTY: Steven Nance of Cherokee.

Continuing education students who received scholarships for the fall semester were:

JACKSON COUNTY: Kimberlee Chun of Cullowhee, Meryem Essangri of Sylva, Megan Harris of Sylva, Jill McDowell of Sylva and Kaylee Montgomery of Cullowhee.

MACON COUNTY: Reuben Shannon of Franklin.

STANLY COUNTY: Mary Vanhoy of Richfield.

The Golden LEAF Foundation is a nonprofit organization established in 1999 to help transform North Carolina’s economy. The foundation receives one-half of North Carolina’s funds from the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement with cigarette manufacturers and places special emphasis on assisting tobacco-dependent, economically distressed and/or rural communities across the state. The Golden LEAF Foundation works in partnership with governmental entities, educational institutions, economic development organizations and nonprofits to achieve its mission.
