Q1) What motivates you to continue and excel at SCC in spite of circumstances you may face?

A1) I am motivated to continue and excel at SCC in spite of difficult circumstances that I face because I know that people depend on me to go above and beyond just reading a textbook and passing tests. I have two jobs on top of being a student at SCC, so the majority of my time goes into working or studying. The difficulties arisefrom trying to balance work with taking care of myself, serving others, and keeping in touch with my support network of family and friends. There are many evenings that I go to bed completely exhausted, but there are many mornings that I wake up thinking about people who need me to always perform at my best. I work as a tutor at SCC and need to stay up to date on the courses I help with and the training available, but seeing others become academically independent and confident is worth time spent revisiting coursework I have already passed. I want to be a paramedic, so whenever I get overwhelmed with EMS coursework, I think about how much my future patients will benefit from me figuring it out in the here and now. I just love serving people and helping them be at 100 percent of who they can be, so I am motivated to operate at 100 percent in everything I do in order to be able to aid others.

Q2) What advice would you give to future students who might face similar situations?

A2) The advice I would give to students facing problems similar to mine (balancing self-care, school, jobs, staying in touch with family and friends, and having enough energy and peace to wait through the tough curve balls life throws) is to smile. It just feels good to put on a confident smile and work yourself up to owning it as a genuine expression in the face of difficulty. Always consider how your knowledge and actions affect others. Life can get tough, scary, disheartening, you name it, but that's true for everyone. Put forth your best effort to ensure that you are constantly improving and caring for yourself so that you are strong enough to support someone else. Pursue confidence. Ask questions. Don't be afraid to offer help to people.
