2018-04-11

Student of the Week April MattoxTo honor some of our most tenacious students, our Student Recognition Retention Action Team has started a “Student of the Week” award.

Following is a quick bio and Q&A with our April D. Mattox, our honoree for the week of March 22:

Degree: Accounting and Business Admin
Graduation: Summer 2018
Q) What motivates you to continue and excel at SCC in spite of circumstances you may face?
A) As an adult student with a husband, pets, and multiple part-time jobs, it's not always easy to find time to complete homework or to study for tests. I have dealt with the death of two family members and experienced many personal struggles in my time here at SCC. I didn't have the opportunity to pursue a degree while I was younger and it has always been a goal of mine to graduate college. Taking online classes at SCC has given me the perfect portal to stay focused and achieve my objective no matter what is happening in my personal life.

Q) What advice would you give to future students who might face similar situations?
A) The instructors at SCC are easily accessible and always ready to help out. The LAC is convenient and available to anyone who feels they need some extra attention. Online classes allow flexible hours for work to be completed no matter what adversity you may be facing at home or work. I would encourage everyone to pursue their dream of a college education and not be afraid to take that first step. No one ever said it would be easy, but if you are committed and have the desire, you can experience the thrill of earning that diploma and beginning the next chapter of your life.
