Student of the Week: Eric Roland

2015-03-04

Eric Roland, a student in the business administration program, has been named student of the week by SCC's Student Recognition Retention Action Team. Following is a Q&A with Eric:

Q) What motivates you to continue and excel at SCC in spite of circumstances you may face?

A) Knowledge is power that can be earned through life’s  experiences as well as a college education.  The burning desire for a better life for my daughter and I is what motivates me.  I am a single father with a full time job, and there are plenty of obstacles that make this path that I am on somewhat of a functional obsolescence.  However,  with a strong will, determination, and enough focus, this gravel road that I am on will eventually become paved.

Q) What advice would you give to future students who might face similar situations?

A) The advice that I would give to the future students, is to keep the momentum going when earning your education, especially for you older students with children.  Taking time off will only postpone your goals that much longer.  Most importantly,  have long-term goals to achieve, but focus on the short-term goals to keep you going.  If you always concentrate on the bigger goal, it can become a little  intimidating and discouraging because it feels so far away.  Make deadlines for your goals and do whatever it takes to complete them.  Once you finish a goal, establish another one—it is this mentality that will make you a successful person.  And the biggest piece of advice is to quit making excuses and just get the job done!!!  Time management is the key.
