Assisted by Karen Owens, President of STAR (Save the Animals Rescue) Ranch in Waynesville, Students in Southwestern Community College’s Upward Bound program completed a day of service at STAR on Oct. 4.

Founded in 2006, STAR is a refuge for abused, neglected and abandoned horses and other hoofed animals.

Upward Bound students from Jackson, Macon and Swain counties learned the history of the non-profit, discussed the importance of animal welfare and advocacy and were able to assist with painting a 60-foot metal corral. They also cleaned out the goat house, scrubbed feed buckets and fed apples to two baby donkeys and their herd.

Upward Bound is a college preparatory program funded by the United States Department of Education as a TRIO program. It’s designed to encourage academic success in high-potential students.
