Rubi Guadarrama is an extraordinary student at Southwestern Community College. She will receive an Associate in Arts degree in May and wants to study social work at a four-year college such as Western Carolina University or Mars Hill.

She was raised in Mexico but was uprooted when she was 10 years old. Her family moved to the United States and she started fourth grade with no prior knowledge of English.  She learned English from her surroundings.  She was selected into the Early College program and transferred to Southwestern Community College two years ago. She recently performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade with the WCU band.

Rubi has been honored as “Student of the Week” for the week of Feb. 9.The award credits students for their perseverance. Honorees are selected by SCC's Student Recognition Retention Action Team.

Here's a brief Q&A with Rubi:

Q1) What motivates you to continue and excel at SCC in spite of circumstances you may face?
A1) “My parents motivate me and I’m internally motivated to succeed because I want to have a good job and succeed in life.”

Q2) What advice would you give to future students who might face similar situations?
A2) “Never give up. Difficulty in life happens and you must try your best to overcome it. The language barrier and culture shock didn’t hold me back. When an opportunity arises, go for it.”
