Commencement FAQs

When is commencement?
The ceremony will be held Wednesday, December 17 at 5:30 p.m. and for all divisions.

What do I wear for commencement?
All graduates must wear the SCC blue cap and gown to march. A complete kit of cap, gown and tassel must be ordered from Herff Jones by Saturday, November 15, 2014. Herff-Jones will ship your order to the bookstore (1st floor, Burrell) where you may pick up and pay beginning Friday, December 5, 2014. Other than the blue gown, there are no specific requirements for shoes or dress.
Students can order caps, gowns, etc. online at Herff Jones and pick it up at the Bookstore on the Jackson Campus!  Click here for more info.

What honor cords and stoles can I wear?
Only academic regalia pertaining to honor societies (Phi Theta Kappa – Kirk Stephens, 339.4376; National Technical Honor Society – Betsy Clayton, 339.4377; Alpha Beta Gamma – Diania McRae, 339.4275) may be worn. No souvenir stoles or cords will be permitted for use during the ceremony.

What side should the tassel be on?
The tassel should hang on the right. During the ceremony, you will be instructed to move your tassel to the left side to show you have graduated.

Are there commencement invitations?
Yes. These announcements can be sent to your family and friends, and they can be purchased directly through Herff Jones. The complete graduation kit only includes cap, gown and tassel. It does not include the announcements.

How many people can I invite to commencement?
As many as you would like. No tickets will be required of your guests to watch you graduate.

When is commencement rehearsal?
Graduation rehearsal will be held on Tuesday, December 16, at 3 p.m. Check in at the Balsam lobby at the Jackson Campus and if you will graduate with honors (based on your cumulative GPA as of summer 2014), you can pick up your honor cord. Consult your catalog for details on honors distinctions (page 33 in the 2014 - 2015 catalog).

Can my family/friends take photos at commencement?
Yes, but please be mindful of others when proceeding down front to take these photos.

Other things to remember…

  • Please do not chew gum.
  • You will line up with whomever you would like. Alphabetic order is not required. You must hold on to your name card you receive at check in.

Diplomas will be mailed within 6-8 weeks following graduation. An announcement will be posted on the SCC homepage when they have been mailed. You may also check your student email account for a notice.
