Holly Bates with the former sheriff and his wifeJust a few short months after setting up an endowed scholarship fund, retired Macon County Sheriff George Moses and his wife Margaret Moses met the first recipient: Holly Bates of Franklin.

Bates is currently enrolled in Southwestern Community College’s Basic Law Enforcement Training program and will soon be entering the profession to which Mr. Moses devoted several decades of his life. She plans to serve on the Franklin Police Department.

“It was amazing to meet the former sheriff and his wife,” said Bates, who’s also in the Army National Guard. “They are wonderful people, and I’m thankful that they set up this scholarship fund. It means a lot to me and is a tremendous help.”

Moses served as Macon County’s sheriff for two separate terms (1970-74 and 1982-86).

“The George Moses Family Scholarship” will be awarded annually to an aspiring law enforcement officer.

“I knew some of (Bates’) relatives years ago,” Mr. Moses said. “It means a lot to be able to meet Holly. This is exactly what we’re wanting to do, help people go into this profession.”
