During a special called meeting on Sept. 14, Bobbi Mathews Carlton of Bryson City was sworn in as the student representative to Southwestern Community College’s board of trustees.
Carlton is currently enrolled in SCC’s Health Information Technology program and is on schedule to graduate in May. She’s a single mother to two children (ages 4 and 7) and is working part-time while attending SCC full-time.
Her goals upon graduation are to gain her national certification as a Registered Health Information Technician and land a medical coding job that allows her the flexibility of working from home and creating her own schedule.
“I've had tremendous support from family and friends to get through some difficult times in life, and I would ultimately like to be able to give back and help support others the way I've been helped and supported,” Carlton said. “I love SCC and the family feeling that it promotes. I think students feel welcome and at home, and that's important especially for students fresh out of High School.”
Carlton also serves on SCC’s student life committee and is vice president and treasurer of the HIT Club.
“I’m pleased to have someone with Bobbi’s background and life experiences serving in this role,” said Dr. Don Tomas, president of SCC. “I can already tell that she will be a strong voice and advocate for our students.”
