Southwestern Community College has hired Brett Woods to serve as director of the SCC Foundation.
Woods brings more than 15 years of higher-education fundraising experience to SCC. He replaces Mary Otto Selzer, who retired earlier this year after helping the foundation achieve its Phase I goal of maximizing a federal match for the Student Success Campaign.
A challenge grant from the U.S. Department of Education doubled the first $300,000 raised, giving the campaign more than $600,000.
Building off that momentum and helping the campaign reach its ultimate goal of raising $1 million is Woods’ top priority.
“I’m thrilled about the opportunity to share with our community the transformational impact SCC and its students have throughout our service area,” Woods said. “We are fortunate to serve such tightly knit communities that understand the value of investing philanthropically in our life-changing and life-saving work.
“SCC has literally trained thousands of nurses, EMT's, paramedics and law enforcement personnel,” Woods added. “Plus, we've provided a strong educational foundation for thousands of students to become productive members of the workforce and upstanding citizens of Jackson, Macon and Swain counties and beyond.”
Prior to joining SCC on Feb. 23, Woods served as director of development for Western Carolina University from 2003-08 and again from 2012 through February of this year. From 2008-12, he held the same title at the University of South Florida.
“We are extremely fortunate to find someone as capable and experienced as Brett for this role,” said Dr. Don Tomas, SCC president. “I’m so impressed with the passion he has for our college and for putting our students first.”
