Ciara Payne (left), who’s enrolled in SCC’s medical sonography program, was sworn in as the student representative to the board of trustees on Oct. 27 at the college’s Macon Campus in Franklin. Growing up in Andrews, Ciara Payne was always impressed by how hard her mother – Laynette Morrow - worked to support their family.

As a second-year student in Southwestern Community College’s medical sonography program, Payne’s goal now is to ensure those sacrifices were worth it.

She’s well on her way.

On track to graduate in May, Payne was recently selected to be the student representative to SCC’s board of trustees. She was sworn in during the trustees’ Oct. 27 meeting at the college’s Macon Campus in Franklin.

“No matter what I do in life, I want to make my Mom proud,” said Payne, a 2012 graduate of Andrews High School. “It’s my ultimate goal. She worked two jobs basically my whole life to support myself and my sister (Chanteah), so I hope I can return the favor one day.

“I was very honored to get this position on the SCC board of trustees, and I thoroughly enjoy being the voice of the students,” she added. “I would like to see the college reaching out to local high schools to inform students that high school grades matter more than they think.”

Payne’s long-term goal is to do travel ultrasound. She will serve on the board of trustees through the spring semester.

“I’m so grateful to Ciara for her willingness to serve on our board of trustees,” said Dr. Don Tomas, president of SCC. “She works hard at her studies here, and she will represent her fellow students well.”
