The road to recovery can be a long one. But when you have the support needed, the path can be a little more bearable.

College can be an especially rough time for students recovering from drug or alcohol addiction while going through the normal stresses of day-to-day college life.

To help support these students, Southwestern Community College applied for and was awarded a $3,000 grant that is funded through Transforming Youth Recovery.

“This funding is very timely since the crisis with drug abuse is impacting our communities,” said Lynda Parlett, SCC’s executive director of institutional development. “The Transforming Youth Recovery grant will enable us to provide a supportive, welcoming environment for students whose lives are affected in one way or another by substance abuse.”

The grant funds will go toward creating a safe place for students to go so they can get away from the pressure to use drugs or alcohol, create sober and fun activities to meet people with like-minds and offer support groups on campus that are easily accessible.

“College brings many stresses, transitions and pressures that could jeopardize someone’s recovery,” said Lori Clancy, SCC’s human services program coordinator. "Transforming Youth Recovery has been working with many four-year universities and decided to extend its efforts to include community colleges. Their funding supports the creation of collegiate recovery programs that can assist and enhance recovery during this difficult time in a student’s life.”

SCC currently provides two weekly student-led support groups and has been collaborating with Catamounts for Recovery, Western Carolina University’s collegiate recovery program and will continue to work with WCU as SCC students transition from the community college setting to a four-year university.
