Eleven current participants in Southwestern Community College’s Upward Bound program set a goal last year to apply for $1,000,000 in scholarship funding.

Many individuals reached their personal goals as the group collectively completed $1,286,172.

The seniors attended high schools in Sylva, Franklin, Cherokee and Bryson City.

“We are so proud of these students,” said Annette Kesgen, director for SCC’s Upward Bound program. “When they set this goal last year, it may have seemed out of reach. But they set their minds on making it happen, and they achieved it through hard work and discipline.”
