Jean Ellen Forrister, a longtime administrator and English Instructor at Southwestern Community College, has been appointed to the college’s board of trustees.

Forrister started at SCC as a part-time English instructor in 1984 and joined the full-time faculty the next year. She later served as director of admissions for seven years then spent five years as the chair of general education. She spent her last three years as a full-time English instructor before retiring in 1999.

“I wouldn’t have accepted an appointment to any other board,” said Forrister, who lives in the Fairview community. “It’s because I care about Southwestern that I am willing to do this. I’m making it a priority.

“I am really a big believer in the community college system everywhere in North Carolina,” Forrister added. “I have a personal passion about SCC and what goes on there.”

Forrister was sworn in on Tuesday, July 28, at the Jackson Campus. She fills the seat previously held by Dewayne Elders, who served on the board since 2011. Forrister’s current term expires on June 30, 2019.

“Jean Ellen brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our board, and we are extremely pleased to welcome her as a trustee,” said Dr. Don Tomas, president of SCC. “She knows our college intimately and obviously cares deeply about SCC and our students. We all look forward to working with her as we continuously look for innovative ways to help our students succeed.”

Also during the July 28 meeting, Terry Bell of Franklin was sworn in for a new four-year term. He has served on the board since 1995 and is currently serving his fourth term as chairman of the board.

“Terry has been fantastic to work with, and we’re very happy that he’s been appointed to a new term,” Dr. Tomas said.
