A sixth-generation native of Macon County, Karl Gillespie was sworn in as a member of Southwestern Community College’s board of trustees on Oct. 13 at the college’s Jackson Campus.

“SCC serves a vital purpose in our community,” Gillespie said. “I’m humbled to be asked to serve on the board of trustees, and I appreciate this opportunity. I will do my best to have a positive impact.”

Gillespie is president of National Communications, Inc., where he has worked since the company’s founding in 1999. He was appointed by Gov. Pat McCrory and replaces Jerry Sutton, who served on the board from 1983 until July of this year.

“I’m very impressed with Mr. Gillespie; he brings additional positive energy and great ideas to our board,” said Dr. Don Tomas, president of SCC. “His background in the field of communications is an added bonus, and we’re delighted he has joined our board of trustees.”
