Students enrolled in Southwestern Community College's Cement Trade at the LBJ Job Corps recently completed a community enhancement project at the Jerry Sutton Public Safety Training Complex (PSTC) in Franklin.

Under the guidance of instructor Keith Ashe and assistant instructor Bill McConnell, the students utilized the skills learned in the program to build steps and a walkway around the flag pole in the parking lot.

The previous steps were in poor repair.

The new walkway has become an important part of the flag raising and lowering ceremonies that are held every morning and afternoon.

“The steps were in disarray and a hazard before, and the students did a great job on the steps and walkway; they are a wonderful add-on to our campus and have helped make that area a safer place,” said Curtis Dowdle, SCC’s dean of public safety training. “And the new flagpole allows for the honor guard to properly present the colors, and allows us to all appropriately honor the flag during the drill and ceremony our recruits do on a daily basis.”

Cement trade instructor Keith Ashe said his students work on several projects similar to the steps and walkway throughout their time in his course.

“These projects are a great way for students to get hands-on training while giving back to the community,” Ashe said.

The LBJ Job Corps gives students the opportunity to earn a high school diploma or GED while also training for a trade. One of the Job Corps’ goals is to help students line up a job before graduating.
