Whitnie Coggins of Sylva and Glenn Beasley of Whittier are two recipients of the National Engaged Leader Award.

The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) held its induction and awards ceremony on April 21 at SCC’s Jackson Campus.

The chapter inducted ten new members and awarded eight members with the Society’s National Engaged Leader Award - given to society members who demonstrate a high level of engagement in leadership skill development and community service. The recipients are, from Macon County: Nichole Hill of Otto and Nathan Olson (Franklin); from Jackson County: Glenn Beasley (Whittier), Whitnie Coggins (Sylva) and Yesenia Navarro (Cullowhee); from Swain County: Carrie Stratton (Whittier); from Haywood County: Paige Phillips (Waynesville) and Seth Tate (Murphy).

Inductees to the society must hold a 3.00 GPA and be enrolled in 12 credit hours during the semester, participate in leadership training and attend three speaking events. Inductees included Macon County residents Latresa Downs (Franklin), Kristeena Gray (Franklin), Wayne Jenkins (Franklin) and Amy Justus (Franklin); Jackson County residents Tera Gravier (Sylva), Bethany Lewis (Cullowhee), Corey Smolik (Sylva) and Anna Tilson (Cullowhee); Swain County’s Nick Jones (Whittier) and Haywood County’s Courtney Craig (Waynesville).

"The National Society of Leadership and Success is very different from any other honor society. In this society students have the opportunity  not only to be recognized for their academic merit, but also to develop their leadership skills in a direct, hands-on way,” said chapter faculty advisor Dr. Fairley Pollock. “Our NSLS members are truly remarkable and I have been honored to be a part of their growth and development here at SCC."
