After more than a month of being in the classroom full-time, 13 Southwestern Community College radiography students have begun their clinical rotations at a variety of area hospitals.
On their first set of rotations, these students will work under the direction of radiography professionals and will assist in the taking of X-Rays as well as other daily tasks.
“I’m very excited but kind of nervous too,” said JC Blake, a Fletcher resident who is assigned to MedWest Haywood. “Hopefully we’ll get to take chest x-rays. I know I’ll follow the techs around and do whatever they need me to.”
All the students are working toward a two-year, associate’s degree. Upon graduation, they can work in diagnostic x-ray departments or continue to specialty areas like MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), nuclear medicine, sonography, mammography, CT (Computed Tomography), radiation therapy or continue their education and work toward a bachelor’s degree.
“We’re very excited about this group of first-year students,” said Meg Rollins Petty, program coordinator at SCC. “They’ll get five semesters of academic and clinical training, and they’re on track to graduate in May of 2015 with all the skills they need to begin a rewarding a prosperous career.”
