Kasey Wilson, a second-year student in Southwestern Community College’s respiratory therapy program, was one of two students statewide to win a Jim Whitley Memorial Scholarship this fall.

Maintaining the standard of success set by last year’s respiratory therapy students at Southwestern Community College, Kasey Wilson of Cullowhee recently was named a Jim Whitley Memorial Scholarship recipient.

Nineteen community college students from across the state applied, and two scholarships were awarded. Paul Forgues of Catawba Valley Community College was the other recipient.

The scholarships, worth $600 each, were presented by the North Carolina Association of Respiratory Educators in memory of Whitley – a member of the first respiratory therapy graduating class at Central Piedmont Community College. He played an integral role in the formation of the Respiratory Care Licensing Board and was a faculty member for the Respiratory Therapy program at CPCC for 30 years.

“This is a tremendous honor for Kasey,” said Samantha Campbell, BSRT, RCP and repiratory therapy program coordinator at SCC. “There is always a lot of competition for these scholarships, so we’re thrilled that Kasey was able to get one.”

Wilson’s scholarship news is the latest in a series of accomplishments at the state and national levels by students in SCC’s respiratory therapy program.

Last fall, the program’s second-year students won a statewide quiz competition then placed fourth at the national competition in Las Vegas. This summer, recent graduate Noah Jones recorded one of the nation’s highest scores on his wRRT (written Registered Respiratory Therapist) licensing exam.

Southwestern, which WalletHub ranks among the Top 10 community colleges in the nation, serves Jackson, Macon, Swain Counties and the Qualla Boundary. For more information about SCC and the programs it offers, visit www.southwesterncc.edu or call 828.339.4000.
