Fourteen graduates of Southwestern Community College’s respiratory therapy program were recognized during a May 11 pinning ceremony at the Jackson Campus.

All graduates are eligible to take entry level examinations from the National Board of Respiratory Care and may also take the Advanced Practitioner exam. They may be employed in hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices, nursing homes or other healthcare settings.

Among the graduates were members of the state champion “Sputum Bowl” quiz team: Matt Hixon of Candler, Jay Cleary of Waynesville, Kasey Wilson of Cullowhee and Chase Souza of Asheville. Cleary, Hixon and Wilson also teamed up to win the statewide Gladiator competition this spring.

Their instructors are program coordinator Samantha Campbell and clinical coordinator Brent Holland.

“This entire class has been amazing,” Campbell said. “Our program is extremely challenging, but all these students have proven to us that they have the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the next chapter of their lives.”
