One of the greatest needs in the healthcare industry today is for more nurses.

Thanks to two challenging years of study and training at Southwestern Community College, a new group of nurses are ready to help address that need in Western North Carolina.

SCC’s 23 nursing graduates were honored in a May 5 pinning ceremony at the college’s Jackson Campus.

“It is not easy to get an associate degree in nursing from Southwestern Community College, and there’s good reason for that,” said Barbara Connell, program coordinator. “When our graduates enter the workplace, we want them to be prepared for whatever situations they may encounter. I am extremely proud to say that all these graduates have proven to us that they’re ready to excel as nurses.”

Graduates are eligible to apply and take their licensure exams. Some graduates will go directly into the workforce while others may continue on to pursue their bachelor’s degree.

Among the honorees was Danielle Shomper, SCC’s first graduate through the RIBN (Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses) program. She completed three years at SCC and is on track to complete her bachelor’s of science in nursing from Western Carolina University within a year.
