BRYSON CITY - Southwestern Community College’s Swain Center is enhancing its resources and classes that are available for the summer and fall semesters.

Used for education since it was constructed in the 1940s, the building that houses SCC’s Swain Center currently helps Swain County residents reduce travel cost by studying closer to home. The facility is currently home to a pair of curriculum programs: outdoor leadership and associate in fine arts.

“This fall, we’ll be offering more general education classes such as English, math and  humanities,” said Jennie Ashlock, enrollment services administrative assistant. “These are a great way for Swain County residents to save some travel time while working toward their college degree, diploma or certificate.”

The Nantahala School for the Arts, which incorporates the associate in fine art and heritage arts programs, offers degree and non-degree art classes in many mediums from pottery to printing in the Cherokee language.

The outdoor leadership program offers an associate degree as well as certificates in wilderness therapy and wilderness emergency medicine.

Educational Opportunities offers free High School Equivalency classes and a Job and Career Preparation lab to help students/community members develop professional skills and find employment.

The SCC Swain Center also features a computer lab that is available year round to all SCC students.

Enrollment Services staff are always on site to help students with registration or to answer any questions they may have.
