Longtime educator Gary Shields has been appointed to his second term on Southwestern Community College’s board of trustees.

Shields was sworn in on July 26. His new term runs through June 30, 2020.

“Our communities have grown due to the willingness of SCC to grow with us as new adventures in our economy have appeared,” Shields said. “SCC has been fortunate to have leaders who were not satisfied with the status quo and sought leaders within our communities to challenge the norm. Our region owes a lot to SCC, and many of our high schools have been able to deliver alternative programs to our youth at affordable costs.”

A Macon County native and Vietnam War veteran, Shields spent 37 years as an educator – including 21 years as principal of Franklin High School.

He also served as a teacher, guidance counselor and elementary principal.

After retiring in June, 2010, he served four years as a member of the Macon County Board of Education. In November, he will have completed his second year as a Macon County commissioner.

“Mr. Shields has devoted so much of his life and energy to the field of education, and we are fortunate he is willing to serve on our board of trustees,” said Dr. Don Tomas, president of SCC. “Anytime we talk about SCC, his very first priority is always our students and how we can best help them succeed. We are grateful for his service to SCC and our students.”
