On May 7, Southwestern Community College’s Nantahala School for the Arts recognized six individuals for completion of the Master Potter Certificate.

Certificate recipients were Annie Burrell from Franklin, Susan Coe, Jolynn Matthews, Ed McIlvaine, Kari McIlvaine from Bryson City and Kay Wolf from Sylva. To earn the Master Potter Certificate, students must complete 100 CEUs of studio instruction and business courses.

The Master Potter program focuses on studio art partnered with business training to prepare students to operate their own studio-based craft business. According to a survey based on 2010 census data, 25 percent of the workforce in Jackson and Swain Counties and 23 percent in Macon County are employed in creative work as artists, crafters, gallery owners, musicians and writers. The Master Potter program plays an important role in providing training to sustain the arts & crafts industry within Jackson, Swain and Macon counties.

Southwestern Community College offers the Master Potter Certificate program at the Nantahala School for the Arts, located in the SCC Swain Center at 60 Almond School Road in Bryson City.
