Q) What motivates you to continue and excel at SCC in spite of circumstances you may face?

A) I am career oriented. I push myself to excel at SCC because I want to get into a good four-year institution after I get my associates degree. My family background is not a very good one. I have dreams and goals, and I am not going to give those up for simple-minded pleasures, such as being lazy, procrastinating, going to parties, etc. and possibly ruin my chances of achieving my goals and dreams. I am in Early College, so I take high school and college classes at the same time. I love learning, and balance my education with my home life, and extra-curricular activities. I volunteer at the Community Table of Sylva, and, everyday, I see people in my own community who did not take their chance at getting a good education seriously. All of them tell me that my best chance in life is to get a  good education. My family inspires me to stay on track with my goals, and to continue to motivate myself to do well in school. If I do my best in school, and balance my education with the rest of my life, then my younger brother can look up to me, and see that if I can do it, then he can too.

Q) What advice would you give to future students who might face similar situations?

A) Advice that I would give to future students who may face situations similar to mine, is simply this; If I can do it, so can you. Never give up on yourself, even when you really want to.  As Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, "When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on." If you believe in yourself, then no one can ever put you down, and you can do anything and go anywhere that you set your mind to.
