Q) What motivates you to continue and excel at SCC in spite of circumstances you may face?

A) Honestly, to me it is the honor be a part of this nursing program. Everyone had spoken to me prior to me applying about how difficult the program is to be accepted into, I mean out of 475 students qualifying and 60 getting interviews and accepting 30, that is a huge honor to simply be accepted. I am continuously motivated by my classmates, they are inspiring to say the least. We are a group who came into this program together and have been through highs, lows, and every space in between. Each and every individual person in my class puts me in awe, their ability to stay strong-willed, motivated, vulnerable, and caring at the same time is enough to motivate anyone. I have honestly never been part of such a diverse group with such common ideas and goals, it's something many are, unfortunately, unable to be a part of. Beyond that, I am motivated to be the nurse I have always wanted to be, to make my son proud, to make my family proud and to make my patients proud to call me a nurse. It's challenging to balance motherhood, being a wife, and being a student, but the fact that I am able to witness patients who are enduring more than I could imagine keeps me thankful for what I have. Being away from my family and having to choose studying over going to the park or to breakfast often makes me wonder why I am doing this, but then I remember that patient I saw last week, whom had to give up breakfast/lunch/dinner, simply because they were in need of someone to care for them, all while I am still able to care for my family while caring for theirs.

Q) What advice would you give to future students who might face similar situations?

A) Gracious, advice.... I don't know about advice, but I would say that I think believing in yourself is the place to start. Attitude changes everything. We are made to have emotions, don't fight them, and we live in a world where we are constantly being looked at through the eyes of others, but none of that matters as long as you know who you are and what you want to be and stick to it. Be yourself, if obstacles come your way, beat them. Be the person who you are inside of you and love that person, there's nobody in the entire world who can be a better you than you! Remember what got you to where you are today, and strive to continue that journey, no matter the obstacles, life will always throw obstacles in your direction, it's how we deal with those obstacles that makes you distinguished.
