Student Toolkit Workshops

Join us for a series of workshops designed to help you succeed at SCC! From learning key computer skills to building a thesis, SCC staff are here to help!

All sessions are FREE and open for drop-in attendance. All sessions are held on Tuesdays from 2 to 3 p.m.

Sessions:

1/20/26, 2-3pm

Location: Jackson LAC (Hyflexing to Macon LAC, Room 232 and Google Meet)

Led by: Lauren Fidler, ELA/HRD Coordinator

Description: This workshop aims to guide students through various platforms, programs, and tools on their computers/laptops using helpful tips, tricks, and how-tos. Primary focus will be on the Google Suite (slides, forms, Docs) and Microsoft Office/365, but will additionally navigate students through things like inserting images into documents, adding attachments to emails, and other common computer-based tasks. Students will also be able to request specific topics to be covered, and questions to be answered.

Led by: Logan Gentry, e-Learning Coordinator

Description: This interactive workshop introduces Southwestern Community College students to Moodle, the learning management system used for online and hybrid coursework. Students will learn how to access and navigate their courses, locate essential materials, and complete common course tasks. Through guided demonstration and optional hands-on practice, participants will identify key course components, demonstrate how to submit assignments, participate in discussion forums, interpret grades and instructor feedback, and locate support resources. By the end of the session, students will have a foundational understanding of Moodle and feel confident beginning their online learning experience.

Led by: Jordan Upton, Learning Assistance Center Director

Description: This session will introduce Honors Project-eligible students to the Honors project process from proposal to the final draft, and the accompanying presentational element. We will discuss timelines, deadlines, process steps, and answer any questions about the Honors Project in general. We plan to share previous student sample projects, share the benefits of completing a project, and offer advice/suggestions for students doing projects.

2/17/26, 2-3pm

Led by: Erin McCully, Director of Instructional Development

Description: This hands-on session will help you learn how to use SCC's text-to-speech tool that can go far beyond simply reading text aloud. Read&Write has many features that we will explore, including translation, simplifying text, removing distractions on websites, and more. Join us for a demonstration and discussion of how you can use Read&Write to support your learning. 

2/24/26, 2-3pm

Led by: Jordan Upton, Learning Assistance Center Director & Freya Kinner, Student Accessibility Coordinator (Jackson LAC), and Betsy Proffitt, Macon LAC Coordinator (Macon LAC)

Description: SCC students lead BUSY lives! This session is intended to help you organize and prioritize your time. In this session, you will start to develop time management skills, discuss barriers to good time management, and start to set goals and priorities. Need more help? You can follow up this session with an LAC tutor to continue to develop skills! 

3/17/26, 2-3pm

Led by: Jordan Upton, Learning Assistance Director & Betsy Proffitt, Macon LAC Coordinator

Description: Guiding students through the initial development stages of the writing process, starting with understanding the assignment’s purpose, planning/prewriting, organizing, and developing a thesis. Will underline the importance of a clear, restrictive, direct thesis statement, and building paper around supporting that thesis. 

3/24/26, 2-3pm

Location: Jackson LAC (Hyflexing to Macon LAC, Room 232)

Led by: Tina Adams, Library Director

Description: In this session, we will begin by discussing the different types of scholarly sources, as well as credibility and bias in sources. In the hands-on portion of the workshop, attendees are encouraged to follow along while the librarian demonstrates techniques for searching library databases and resources and provides tips for how to follow where the research leads. 

4/14/26, 2-3pm

Led by: Jordan Upton, Learning Assistance Center Director & Freya Kinner, Student Accessibility Coordinator (Jackson LAC), and Betsy Proffitt, Macon LAC Coordinator  (Macon LAC)

Description: In this session, you will start to develop a toolkit for testing. You will learn study skills, organizational approaches, ways to tackle test-related stress, and other “hacks” for test prep, test taking, and test review.
