Moodle Tip: Preparing Students to Use Respondus LockDown Browser

 Moodle Tip of the Week

Preparing Students to Use Respondus LockDown Browser

? Question:   I am planning to use the Respondus LockDown Browser for an upcoming quiz in Moodle. What can I do to help students use the tool successfully?

√ Answer:   SCC uses the Respondus LockDown browser to proctor tests in Moodle. If you plan to use it, we highly recommend adding to your course a sample ungraded quiz requiring the LockDown browser. This gives students the opportunity to download the software, test it out, and see if there are any compatibility issues with their computers or browsers prior to a higher stakes assessment. (Alternately, you can tell students to go to the Student Moodle Tutorials course, where we have a sample quiz that requires the LockDown Browser.)

Additionally, including a link to the student tutorial in your own course is helpful. This link goes to a tutorial in the Student Moodle Tutorials area that has instructions for students on downloading and using the browser - please feel free to include this resource in your own course.

Last, but not least, the Respondus LockDown Browser does not work on Chromebooks at this time, so you will want to ensure that students will have access to computers other than Chromebooks to take any tests equipped with proctoring.
