Mike DespeauxFor more than two decades, Mike Despeaux has been connecting students with employers and employment opportunities.

Currently the Director of Career Services at Southwestern Community College, he’s also developed a tremendous respect and appreciation for those who serve in the military and public safety professions.

That’s why he’s organizing one of the largest outdoor events in SCC’s 59-year history.

On April 11, recruiters for more than three dozen public safety agencies – as well as all five branches of the U.S. Military – will converge on Southwestern’s Jackson Campus for “Hometown Heroes.” It’s a career and resource fair for anyone interested in the military, law enforcement, corrections, fire/medical first responders, emergency and disaster response.

The event will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Burrell Conference Center and parking lot.

“I’ve always been extremely grateful to our veterans and all of the individuals who protect and serve our country and our communities,” Despeaux said. “This event is an opportunity for us to give back, show our appreciation for all who are currently serving and also to help the next generation explore all the pathways that are available for them.”

Free food will be provided, and the event will open with a guitar solo of the national anthem by Scott Baker, SCC’s Vice President for Information Technology. Officials are working to secure a flyover by the Air Force.

A number of area fire departments, police departments and rescue squads plan to attend along with large law enforcement agencies such as Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office in the Winston-Salem area, Greensboro Police Department and the Cobb County (Ga.) Police Department.
