Faculty reach across departments to help one another

SCC math instructor Vicki Todd, recently flipped her Math 171 class as a part of a project requirement for ACCCESS, a nationwide math faculty group that she is a member of.

To flip a class means students are required to do some level of work before they come to class. It involves discussion, problem-based learning and watching videos outside of classroom time or pre-class readings. It is common in English but not in math; especially in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) math, which is what Todd’s Math 171 class is.

Projects are a major requirement of being a member of ACCCESS.

Todd had to create a poster to go along with the project that she presented the week before Thanksgiving at the national conference for AMATYC (American Mathematical Association for Two Year Colleges) in Denver.

The instructions called for her to paste pages on a poster board that ACCCESS provided.

Todd found a template that would print the entire poster instead of multiple pages, but could not find a printer that could print something of that size.

When Todd asked advertising and graphic design coordinator/ instructor Bob Keeling if he could help, he gladly agreed.

“Not only did he take the time to print the poster, but he also trimmed it down to fit the board and found a tube for it to travel in,” said Todd. “I looked like a rock star! The poster turned out beautiful. Bob saved the day. He told me that if you are coming from a top-rated college, you should look like it - and I did.”

Keeling printed the poster using one of the large graphic design printers and gave Todd a very professional looking poster to present at the conference.
