SCC instructor Amy Russ recently earned her certification as a Developmental Education Specialist from Kellogg Institute.

Amy Russ, a Developmental English Instructor at SCC, was recently certified as a Developmental Education Specialist from the Kellogg Institute - one of the most prestigious credentials in the field of developmental education.

The Kellogg Institute for the Certification of Adult and Developmental Educators is the nation's longest running professional development program of its kind. The Institute is located at Appalachian State University and is a four-week, intensive, residential program. To become certified as a Developmental Education Specialist, participants in the program must complete the four-week program and develop a practicum project to implement at their own campus.

Russ completed her training at the Institute in July 2014 and submitted her practicum earlier this summer. She received her certification in late June. Her practicum project was developing a co-requisite course to support students enrolled in a college English course.

“Working with national leaders in the field of Developmental Education has helped me to see the bigger picture of student needs so that I can be an advocate for students who would otherwise be unlikely to achieve their academic goals,” Russ said of her experience at the Kellogg Institute.
