SCC STEM event challenges high school students with fun activities

2021-12-15

On Oct. 22, Southwestern Community College hosted the fifth annual Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) event at the Macon Campus.

With continuing CDC guidelines, a limited number of Franklin High School students had the opportunity to participate.

“SCC STEM day is a favorite field trip for FHS students,” said FHS science teacher and STEM event chaperone, Sarah Weresuk. “Students enjoy working in small groups on challenging STEM topics, and they get to learn about dual enrollment opportunities available through SCC. It is always a fun-filled day of learning for everyone.”

SCC math instructor, Elaine Merritt, and science instructor, Michael McIntosh, helped students rotate between three different challenges.

The first was about DNA and genetics, in which students made a bracelet reflecting their personal genetic expressions. They also extracted their own DNA using cheek swabs to create DNA necklaces.

The second activity involved a Fuel Cell Hydrogen Car, allowing students to learn about alternative fuels with a hands-on experience of building the car.

The third challenge was a Lost Mummy Escape Room, in which students used clues, math puzzles, and logic to find the lost mummy and escape.

“The field trip to SCC was a great learning experience working with others,” said FHS sophomore Hailey Jennings. “It brought me out of my comfort zone, taught me to work with others that I didn’t know, and solidified my interest in pursuing a science career.”
