Heather Whitt, a senior at Swain High and a participant in SCC’s Upward Bound program, recently earned a full-tuition scholarship to the University of Miami.

Swain High senior and Southwestern Community College Upward Bound participant Heather Whitt has been awarded the Ronald A. Hammond Scholarship to attend the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla.

The scholarship is a full-tuition award totaling approximately $182,000 across four years. It recognizes outstanding high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to personal goals, and who intend to continue their academic pursuits through graduate school.

Named in honor of the university’s first director of minority affairs, the scholarship is administered by the office of academic enhancement.

Miami recommended over 200 students to compete for the scholarship out of 32,000 applications. This year’s incoming class of Hammonds includes 15 first-generation college students and an average GPA of 3.625.

“You won’t regret choosing her as a Hammond Scholar,” Erica Muse, Academic Advisor for Upward Bound said. “She is bright, sincere, humble, thoughtful and a hard worker.”
