Young woman with dark hair and red lipstick smiles for a selfieOur student of the week is Ashley Towns! She is expected to graduate this fall with her Associate of Applied Science in Outdoor Leadership, along with her Wilderness Therapy certificate.

We asked Ashley a few questions about herself and what inspires her:

Who is one of your role models? How has that person helped with your educational journey?
My biggest role model is my mom. She has had more than her fair share of challenges and hardships throughout her lifetime. As life got more difficult and unforgiving, she only got stronger and more resilient. She has always been so tender and selfless; she never let the world turn her hard or cold. Despite every challenge, she persevered. My mom has always been my biggest source of support in every facet of my life. She still inspires me everyday and I am so thankful for her.

What motivates you to excel at SCC in spite of difficult circumstances you may face?
Whenever I begin to doubt myself or feel like quitting because of the difficult circumstances that I am faced with, I remember every time I persevered and overcame my hardships. I could let these difficulties destroy me, or I could let them build me up. For as long as I am alive, I refuse to let those difficulties defeat me. Many of these circumstances are far from being behind me, but I won’t let them control me. I am motivated by the desire to achieve my goals and fulfill my greater purpose in life.

There is a specific quote with a  message that I have always tried to emulate in my own life during especially hard times: “Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers, but to be fearless in facing them. Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain, but for the heart to conquer it.” - Rabindranath Tagore

What advice would you give to other students who face tough challenges?
Facing challenges on your journey is inevitable, but letting those challenges defeat you is optional. These challenges only become obstacles when you allow them to have power over you. When you learn how to react to, manage, and work through these challenges, then they can no longer have power over you. Make your challenges work for you. Own them. Challenges are opportunities for growth and development. Never lose faith in yourself or your ability to persevere despite difficult situations.

We are so proud of everything you have accomplished so far, Ashley. We can't wait to see what you'll do next!
