Student of the Week: Grey Jenkins

2017-04-04

To honor some of our most tenacious students, our Student Recognition Retention Action Team has started a “Student of the Week” award.

Faculty members nominate students based on their tenacity, and the team selects one per week.

Congratulations to Grey Jenkins, who's been named our "Student of the Week!"

What motivates you to continue and excel at SCC in spite of circumstances you may face?
What motivates me to excel at SCC, in spite of circumstances I may face, is knowing that when I do well in my classes at Southwestern, it will create more opportunities for me when I transfer to Western Carolina University. College is expensive, and having good grades may open up scholarship opportunities that would not have been available otherwise. I set my expectations high for myself, and challenge myself to complete them. This motivates me to go the extra mile, to excel in everything I do. Even if that means getting help from someone else, it is an acknowledgement that I want to excel in my schoolwork. I am not only trying to get good grades for the sake of transferring in the future, but also to have a higher possibility of getting a good job. I know that the better grades I have, the more likely I will have a good job in the future to sustain all my needs.

What advice would you give to future students who might face similar situations?
Advice I would give to future students is to set a goal. Before I started college, I set a goal for myself: to excel in my studies. For me, the hardest thing to do is to stay on top of all my assignments. When it gets hard, I remember my goal and remind myself of what I am striving for and of the future benefits of achieving my goal. Having this goal re-motivates me. No matter how difficult an obstacle I face is to overcome, I remember my goal and push through the tough times. I would encourage students to set a goal for themselves. Realizing what kind of future you want for yourself is great motivation to excel and meet your goals.
