Trail race director presents check to benefit Student Emergency Fund

2021-05-27

The support that Southwestern Community College receives is always put to use, for the benefit of students through various programs.

One of these is the Student Emergency Fund, which was created by the SCC Foundation to support students who encounter a sudden financial emergency that could impact their education at SCC.

In April, Brian Barwatt presented a check for $4,100 to SCC President Dr. Tom Tomas. The check will be donated to the Fund from proceeds of the Assault on Blackrock trail race.

Assault on Blackrock is a seven-mile race in Pinnacle Park. Runners summit Blackrock Mountain and trail through the Plott Balsam Mountains on challenging roads and paths.

“I try to give the proceeds from the race to different organizations in Sylva every year,” said Barwatt. “I’ve graduated from and worked at SCC, and Scott Clontz with his graphic design students have helped with the race for years. I felt it was a good time to give back to the college.”
